The Agentic Engineering Playbook top engineers are using

Most engineers are stuck babysitting AI one prompt at a time. A handful have figured out how to build agents that plan, execute, and self-correct on their own.

Sign up for The Code newsletter and get access to The Complete Playbook for Agentic Engineering. Claude Code, subagents, MCP, all of it.

Quote of the Week

"Software is like entropy: It is difficult to grasp, has no weight, and obeys the second law of thermodynamics; i.e., it always increases." — Norman Augustine

News

Cloudflare is challenging developers to build the next Git platform for an agent-driven world using Workers and Artifacts, with support for many agents working concurrently on the same codebase. Submissions are open until October 14, with the top three teams invited to Cloudflare Connect in San Francisco and the winner receiving $25,000 in Cloudflare credits.

Reading List

Skip lists use multiple probabilistic layers of linked lists to achieve O(log n) average search, insertion, and deletion without requiring balanced trees. The article explains how they work and why they are useful in systems such as HNSW-based nearest-neighbor search and vector database indexing.

Uber’s MCP Gateway provides a centralized layer for connecting AI agents to internal services, standardizing tool discovery, protocol translation, security, and observability. The architecture is designed to make MCP easier to manage at scale while reducing duplication and complexity across teams and services.

Retry, timeout, hedging, circuit breaking, bulkheading, and deduplication each involve a small amount of state but a long list of edge cases. The author tested eleven libraries across the same 21 scenarios and published the results as a live comparison matrix.

PostgreSQL’s planner can automatically rewrite queries through techniques like constant folding, subquery flattening, filter pushdown, and expression simplification before execution. Small changes in SQL can still lead to very different query plans, so understanding what the planner rewrites helps explain surprising performance differences.

LIFT adds a lightweight recurrent state to Transformer language models, letting deep-layer information feed back across generation steps instead of relying only on previously generated tokens. Across models from 135M to 1B parameters, it outperformed standard Transformers on language modeling, reasoning, and procedural tasks while keeping pretraining fully parallel.

Curiosity AI rebuilt its design language in just three days using coding agents, rapidly exploring and refining many visual directions while keeping the underlying content consistent. The case study shows how clear design rules, agent-readable specifications, and frequent human review can dramatically speed up design-system iteration.

Software blogging often goes wrong through predictable habits like slow introductions, unnecessary assumptions about readers, stiff prose, and excessive reliance on external links. The piece offers practical ways for developers to make technical writing clearer, more direct, easier to scan, and more useful on both desktop and mobile.

Self-hosted HTTP tunnels can be built with just OpenSSH and nginx, exposing local services through temporary public URLs without relying on tools like ngrok. The setup uses SSH remote forwarding, nginx proxying, expiring secure links, and a helper script to make the workflow convenient.

A Visual Guide to Bag-of-Words, RNNs, CNNs, Transformers, Decision Models with Jev-like APIs, and Calibration.

The search at Deezer was clogging up our cache systems. We significantly improved the situation by changing the serialization format of the cached payloads, and rolling out a tailor-made, space-efficient and blazing fast data structure inspired by Hash Array Mapped Tries.

Watch, Listen

AI coding agents are rapidly reshaping software development, with engineers increasingly running multiple agents in parallel, generating more PRs and issues, and relying less on traditional IDEs and manual code review. At the same time, teams are getting smaller, migrations are accelerating, and agentic infrastructure is becoming a new engineering discipline, while planning, testing, domain expertise, and human accountability remain essential.

Robert Seacord explores how Rust enhances memory safety while noting that unsafe Rust remains an unsettled and challenging area for critical system development. He argues that formalizing language specifications is essential to ensure reliability and safety in complex software environments.

Patrick Debois discusses how to manage, evaluate, distribute, and observe context using proven software engineering practices. He shares how treating context like code - complete with testing, CI/CD, package managers, and security scanning - enables engineering leaders to reliably scale AI coding agents, maintain control over non-deterministic outputs, and build long-term organizational knowledge.

Learn how to build an Instagram-style mobile application from scratch using Expo, Codex, Convex, and Clerk. The video covers the entire end-to-end development cycle, from project planning and AI-assisted UI design to testing development builds on physical devices and preparing mandatory legal pages for App Store release.

Coding interview expert Neetcode shares his career journey from quitting Amazon after two months to building his popular educational platform after his time at Google. He discusses the realities of technical hiring, the balance of memorization versus understanding, and his perspective on transitioning to full-time content creation.
